A Hybrid Classroom-Online Curriculum Format for RN-BSN Students: Cohort Support and Curriculum Structure Improve Graduation Rates

Abstract: As more registered nurses (RNs) return to school to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), innovative ways must be found to support them in this endeavor. Barriers for RNs who return to school include scheduling of coursework and fear of failure. One school of nursing with a traditional BSN program reviewed its RN-BSN track, with its low retention and graduation rates. With input from nursing leaders and nurses in the community, the school applied for and was awarded a 3-year Health Resources and Servi… Show more

“…Some respondents like to attend between 3.30 pm to 9.30 pm on weekdays and less of them preferred their attendance between 8.30 am to 4.30 pm on weekdays. Some barriers for RNs who return to school (BSN) program include scheduling of coursework and fear of failure (Davidson, Metzger, Lindgren, 2011). In addition, the stress an RN feels when returning to school can be addressed by using a combined approach that involves faculty and student working together (Davidhizar, Gigen, & Reed, 1993).…”

“…2 The literature supports orientation back into the classroom to boost writing and computer skills, although the best method and timing for such an intervention hasn't clearly been established. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] Reach for RN STARS to overcome barriers In an attempt to explore the feasibility of delivering a continuing-education The RN STARS workshop was conducted in a computer classroom that was easily accessible for nurses working at a large academic medical center in western New York State. The educational content relied heavily on live computer demonstration and student practice opportunities, so a computer classroom with individual computer workstations was an important feature.…”

“…An added benefit of the hybrid cohort model, as reported by students, is the opportunity to learn from other nurses and to be supported by colleagues who are going through the same experience. Davidson, Metzger, and Lindgren (2011) found that when their RN-BSN program moved from a traditional model to a hybrid (in class and online) model, that retention and graduation rates increased to 100%. The improved retention rates were attributed to the redesigned program; student support services, especially with technology; and support from faculty and peers.…”
