A hybrid approach for character modeling using geometric primitives and shape-from-shading algorithm

Abstract: Organic modeling of 3D characters is a challenging task when it comes to correctly modeling the anatomy of the human body. Most sketch based modeling tools available today for modeling organic models (humans, animals, creatures etc) are focused towards modeling base mesh models only and provide little or no support to add details to the base mesh. We propose a hybrid approach which combines geometrical primitives such as generalized cylinders and cube with Shape-from-Shading (SFS) algorithms to create plausibl… Show more

“…Then, visual database is converted into digital data units (vector form) that is read by computing programs. A hybrid approach is need to perfect the character modelling (Kazmi, You, and Zhang, 2015). Since it is quite complicated and sophisticated work, a Digital Designer is required with a combined talent of artistic and digital skills.…”

“…In addition to the aforementioned solutions, depth maps obtained from 3D reconstruction have been used successfully in many different fields of study such as industry, medicine, surface inspection, biometry, and 3D modeling (e.g., Gallen et al, 2015;Han and Zhu, 2005;Kazmi et al, 2016).…”

“…3 D human characters, in particular, 3D faces, are essential elements in virtual and augmented realities [1], [2]. Blendshape, a linear facial expression model, has been widely used in various applications to generate realistic 3D human faces such as face recognition [3], [4], face tracking [5]- [7], performance-based facial capture [8], [9], human reconstruction [10]- [13], and facial retargeting [14], [15] thanks to its simplicity and expressiveness.…”
