A Hybrid 2D/3D User Interface for Radiological Diagnosis

Abstract: This paper presents a novel 2D/3D desktop virtual reality hybrid user interface for radiology that focuses on improving 3D manipulation required in some diagnostic tasks. An evaluation of our system revealed that our hybrid interface is more efficient for novice users and more accurate for both novice and experienced users when compared to traditional 2D only interfaces. This is a significant finding because it indicates, as the techniques mature, that hybrid interfaces can provide significant benefit to image… Show more

“…7,8 The evaluation of visualization dashboards has been a popular research topic in the health care domain in recent years. [9][10][11] The U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has also developed a set of interactive dashboards that provide an overview of facts and statistics about Health IT topics, such as adoption rates and levels of interoperability. 12 Many studies have designed and evaluated visual analytics dashboards, especially those with high interactive and real-time response rates, for how they improve clinical operations and care quality.…”

“…However, the systems in Refs. [21,24] show the generated auxiliary data on external monitors, and the operator must constantly switch the viewpoint, possibly leading to problems in long-term perception. The technique described in Ref.…”

“…mouse and keyboard) and planar surfaces (e.g. monitors and displays) that operate with 2D projections of 3D data [14] increasing the final user's cognitive effort [15] . Therefore, a solution for VV may be one based on the direct exploration of 3D images through a physical real-world environment instead of a fixed 3D virtual space representation such as the use of augmented reality technologies [16] .…”
