A Horizon Scan of Global Conservation Issues for 2016

Abstract: This paper presents the results of our seventh annual horizon scan, in which we aimed to identify issues that could have substantial effects on global biological diversity in the future, but are not currently widely well known or understood within the conservation community. Fifteen issues were identified by a team that included researchers, practitioners, professional horizon scanners, and journalists. The topics include use of managed bees as transporters of biological control agents, artificial superintelli… Show more

“…The methods used to identify issues were consistent with our previous annual horizon scans [1,6,[9][10][11][12][13]. The 25 core participants in the horizon scan (the authors) applied an inclusive, transparent, and repeatable process that is a modification of the Delphi technique [14,15].…”

“…In terms of management, genetic techniques to eradicate mosquitos (strains with wingless females, transgenic strains) have recently received much attention (Paupy et al 2009, Sutherland et al 2011, Alphey et al 2013. Some methods developed for mosquitos spread genes through a population despite the genes conferring a reproductive disadvantage, and are meanwhile also explored for alien plants (Hodgins et al 2009).…”

“…Globally, soil microbes are also a source of discovery in medicine and biotechnology (Bull, 2004;Challis, 2008), and conservation of microbial biodiversity is increasingly discussed (Colwell, 1997;Cockell and Jones, 2009;Sutherland et al, 2010;Bodelier, 2011). Furthermore, a growing literature suggests that the failure of children to be exposed to a diversity of microbes threatens the health of those children, particularly through its relation to allergic and autoimmune diseases (for example, Rook, 2009;Hanski et al, 2012).…”
