A Holistic Packaging Efficiency Evaluation Method for Loss Prevention in Fresh Vegetable Cold Chain

Abstract: With the continuous push for improving packaging efficiency of current packaging practices to prevent losses in a real cold chain, a holistic evaluation method with improved indicators and a conceptual assessment framework to improve packaging efficiency continuously in a fresh vegetable cold chain was proposed. Based on two fresh leafy vegetables with typical packaging practices in a real cold chain in China, the evaluation method was performed and tested from a macro perspective, and then the packaging effic… Show more

“…The gas permeability partially depends on the thickness of the packaging materials. The decrease in thickness can improve the permeability of the film, but its strength will be reduced accordingly, which makes it difficult to meet the requirements of commodity storage and transportation [19]. Therefore, in order to optimize the technology, researchers have adopted microporous modified atmosphere packaging to achieve the coexistence of mechanical strength and freshness-maintaining properties.…”

“…Reproduced with permission from J. Wang et al (2019) on the closed-loop model, which is not a linear economy (take-make-use-dispose) (Rajput & Singh, 2019). In this context, Dhir et al employed valance theory (VT) to determine the consumers' willingness to recycle electric waste (e-waste) by surveying 774 Japanese consumers.…”

“…As shown in Figure 8, J. Wang et al. (2019) described a holistic method to improve the efficiency of the packaging in the fresh produce (tomatoes) supply chain. They defined model based on the four different parameters such as micro environment performance (monitoring the temperature, humidity, and gas content using the digital sensing methods), packaging materials performance (cost input and packaging performance), loss prevention performances in practice (the role of packaging in the prevention of loss), and overall packaging efficiency (sum of the three previous parameters).…”

“…Sachin et al use the integrated framework of Interpretative Structural Modelling (ISM) and the fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DMTAEL) and select and analyze 10 potential drivers that may affect the sustainability of the agricultural product supply chain [10]. Jingjie Wang, proceeding from packaging along the FAPSC, proposes that packaging materials with stronger sustainability characteristics can enhance food security and packaging sustainability of fresh agricultural products, and help reduce the overall costs of the fresh agricultural product chain [11]. Dan Han et al carried out research on the perception of downstream consumers about supply chain risks, finding that the manifestation of the consumers' purchasing intention can reflect the stability and efficiency of the supply chain on the whole [12].…”
