A Holistic Approach to Ship Design: Tools and Applications

Abstract: The present article introduces a holistic approach to ship design, as it is being developed in the Horizon 2020 EU project HOLISHIP (www.holiship.eu). The project deals with the development of design and virtual prototyping simulation platforms, which integrate software tools for all major ship design disciplines and optimization objectives, namely, building and operational cost, energy efficiency, safety, environmental footprint, and life cycle cost/impact assessment. It enables the seamless mathematical mult… Show more

“…This can be seen as an application or evolvement of the framework proposed by Molcho et al [68] for the AM domain. An integrated approach like this also enables a simulation-driven design process in AM, as was demonstrated in other fields already [69,70]. Figure 1 shows the proposed structure for this integration.…”

“…Similarly, the creation of reusable workflows has also taken hold in the field of multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization. Here, numerous engineers from a variety of disciplines collaborate to design complex systems such as ships [38], aircraft [39], helicopters [40], or spacecraft [41]. Such analyses often comprise tools that are under rapid development during the course of an analysis.…”

“…Accepting the design, the rules and regulations set by such an organization must comply with ship design. Ross also identified the rules and standards appropriate to ship design, such as hull shape, structure, engine, machine interface with human and general arrangement (Papanikolaou et al, 2019).…”
