Aging ships and offshore structures face harsh environmental and operational conditions in remote areas, leading to age-related damages such as corrosion wastage, fatigue cracking, and mechanical denting. These deteriorations, if left unattended, can escalate into catastrophic failures, causing casualties, property damage, and marine pollution. Hence, ensuring the safety and integrity of aging ships and offshore structures is paramount and achievable through innovative healthcare schemes. One such paradigm, digital healthcare engineering (DHE), initially introduced by the final coauthor, aims at providing lifetime healthcare for engineered structures, infrastructure, and individuals (e.g., seafarers) by harnessing advancements in digitalization and communication technologies. The DHE framework comprises five interconnected modules: on-site health parameter monitoring, data transmission to analytics centers, data analytics, simulation and visualization via digital twins, artificial intelligence-driven diagnosis and remedial planning using machine and deep learning, and predictive health condition analysis for future maintenance. This article surveys recent technological advancements pertinent to each DHE module, with a focus on its application to aging ships and offshore structures. The primary objectives include identifying cost-effective and accurate techniques to establish a DHE system for lifetime healthcare of aging ships and offshore structures—a project currently in progress by the authors.

The structural integrity of offshore platforms is affected by degradation issues such as subsidence. Subsidence involves large settlement areas, and it is one of the phenomena that may be experienced by offshore platforms throughout their lives. Compaction of the reservoir is caused by pressure reduction, which results in vertical movement of soils from the reservoir to the mud line. The impact of subsidence on platforms will lead to a gradually reduced wave crest to deck air gap (insufficient air gap) and cause wave-in-deck. The wave-in-deck load can cause significant damage to deck structures, and it may cause the collapse of the entire platform. This study aims to investigate the impact of wave-in-deck load on structure response for fixed offshore structure. The conventional run of pushover analysis only considers the 100-year design crest height for the ultimate collapse. The wave height at collapse is calculated using a limit state equation for the probabilistic model that may give a different result. It is crucial to ensure that the reserve strength ratio (RSR) is not overly estimated, hence giving a false impression of the value. This study is performed to quantify the wave-in-deck load effects based on the revised RSR. As part of the analysis, the Ultimate Strength for Offshore Structures (USFOS) software and wave-in-deck calculation recommended by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as practised in the industry is adopted to complete the study. As expected, the new revised RSR with the inclusion of wave-in-deck load is lower and, hence, increases the probability of failure (POF) of the platform. The accuracy and effectiveness of this method will assist the industry, especially operators, for decision making and, more specifically, in outlining the action items as part of their business risk management.

A Mobile Offshore Production Unit (MOPU) is any type of portable structure that can be reused when procuring oil and gas from the seabed. There are few reasons why MOPU is chosen over the conventional fixed offshore platforms, mainly due to its ability to be installed and relocated in a short period, low installation, and abandonment cost, and providing adequate time to evaluate new reservoirs properly. In certain circumstances, MOPU may be required to remain at the same location for a more extended period beyond its designed life. This paper explains the method of life extension (LE) assessment to extend the useful life of the MOPU. A MOPU with a three-legged jack-up rig in cruciform shape designed and constructed based on the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Classification requirement with a design life of 5 years, which currently in laid-up mode after 14 years in operation. The legs will be the focus of the condition assessment for the LE of the MOPU. The MOPU was constructed with 3 tabular legs with each 92200 mm length, 3500 mm diameter, and 55 mm thickness operate under tensile and shear stress, standing with simply supported at the one-end with hull hanged at the tabular using jacking-pin at the equal elevation of 77,600 mm. The method of assessment used is Non-destructive Tests (NDT). No severe defects or cracks were recorded at the identified stress concentration points. All NDT measurements were found within the acceptable ranges with no recorded anomalies.
