A holistic approach for the assessment of the indoor environmental quality, student productivity, and energy consumption in primary schools

Abstract: The perception of the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) through questionnaires in conjunction with in-field measurements related to the indoor air quality (IAQ), the thermal comfort and the lighting environment were studied in nine naturally ventilated schools of Athens, Greece. Cluster analysis was carried out in order to determine the ranges of indoor air pollutants, temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and ventilation rates at which the students were satisfied with the indoor environment. It was found … Show more

“…There was a statistically significant increase in allergy symptoms but not headache, throat irritation, or cough with higher CO 2 concentrations, but the analysis did not control for potential confounding by other factors 40 This cross-sectional study of 1019 students in 51 elementary schools in Portugal measured some indoor air quality parameters and used questionnaires to assess students' health symptoms. The classroom ventilation types were not described.…”

“…Results showed a preference for slightly warmer environments in the heating season and neutral environments in the midseason. Recently, Dorizas et al [22] evaluated the indoor environmental quality of nine Greek primary schools operating in free-running mode. Among other parameters, temperature and relative humidity were measured and a questionnaire was used for a subjective evaluation.…”

“…Survey is the most common method used to investigate the opinions of the occupants (Isaksson & Karlsson, 2006). Other projects which have also used survey to investigate energy demand and indoor climate include Bluyssen et al, (2003); Dorizas et al, (2015); Holopainen et al, (2015); Isaksson & Karlsson, (2006);La Fleur et al, (2017);Rohdin et al, (2012) and Rohdin et al, (2014).…”
