A Highly Active and Recyclable Catalytic System for CO2/Propylene Oxide Copolymerization

Abstract: Copolymerization of CO 2 and epoxide catalyzed by metal complexes has drawn much attention recently.[1] In the initial report by Inoue and co-workers in 1969 the catalyst activity was poor (turnover number (TON): 6; turnover frequency (TOF): 0.12 h À1 ), [2] but by the early 2000s it had been significantly improved by using binary catalytic systems of [Co(salen)] [3] or [Cr(salen)] complexes [4] with an onium salt or base (1; salen = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine,[5] It was proposed that the two comp… Show more

“…These have achieved TOFs of ca. 10 3 h −1 and the right combination of steric and electronic effects of the salen ligand frame have yielded regioregular and even stereoselective polymerizations, starting from racemic epoxides . The formation of polycarbonates including PPC have been the topic of several excellent recent reviews, and it is not the purpose of this article to update these, but rather to report and summarize the work in this laboratory that has been devoted to the study of the Inoue's porphyrin systems with the three metals Al, Cr and Co, in their trivalent states .…”

“… 2 Since the discovery of the ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides and CO 2 by Inoue in 1969, 3 a variety of metal complex catalysts have been developed, 4 20 such as Co(salen), 4 6 Cr(salen), 7 9 Zn(β-diiminate), 10 and metalloporphyrins. 11 , 12 , 20 Among them, multinuclear metal complexes 4b , 6c , 9 , 10b , 13 17 and bifunctional monometallic complexes 4a , 6b , 18 20 have exhibited notable catalytic performances. Among several effective metal elements, aluminum is fascinating from the viewpoint of low toxicity, low price, and abundance on the earth.…”
