As interest in renewable energy sources is steadily on the rise, tidal current energy is receiving more and more attention from politicans, industrialists, and academics. In this article, the conditions for and potential of tidal currents as an energy resource in Norway are reviewed. There having been a relatively small amount of academic work published in this particular field, closely related topics such as the energy situation in Norway in general, the oceanography of the Norwegian coastline, and numerical models of tidal currents in Norwegian waters are also examined. Two published tidal energy resource assessments are reviewed and compared to a desktop study made specifically for this review based on available data in pilot books. The argument is made that tidal current energy ought to be an important option for Norway in terms of renewable energy.

During the storm event 29-31 October 2000 long regular trains of residual sea-level oscillations with period about 6 h occurred in the North Sea area. Crestto-trough heights up to 0.8 m were observed along the western coast of Norway. Model simulations show that these oscillations were mainly due to spatial and temporal variations in the atmospheric forcing and were not the result of nonlinear tide-surge interaction. The oscillations propagated northwards along the Norwegian coast and the signal was amplified in some fjords in agreement with predictions by high-resolution regional models. In Skagerrak in the north eastern North Sea the main storm-surge signal appeared as amplitudemodulated oscillations with period about 12 h and crestto-trough height up to 1.5 m. Here the tide-surge interaction contributed up to about 20% of the peak surge. On the coast of Scotland and in the southern part of the North Sea nonlinear effects produced oscillations with 6-h period at some stations.

Buried iceberg scours reveal reduced North Atlantic Current during the stage 12 deglacial

Reconstructing past ocean-climate environments and heat transport requires proxies from which these conditions can be quantified. This is particularly important for the evaluation of numerical palaeoclimate models. Here we present new evidence for a reduced North Atlantic Current (NAC) at the termination of the third last glacial, for which palaeocurrent information was previously unavailable. This is based on an exquisitely preserved set of buried iceberg scours seen in three-dimensional seismic reflection images from the mid-Norwegian slope. The scours were formed ∼430 ka during the transition from glacial to interglacial conditions. The spiral geometry of the scours suggests that they were carved by grounded icebergs influenced by tidal and geostrophic ocean currents. Using the ratio between the estimated tidal and geostrophic current velocities and comparing them with velocities from the Last Glacial Maximum and the present, we show that the stage 12 NAC velocities may have been ∼50% slower than the present.
