A high repetitive rate intense electron beam accelerator based on high coupling Tesla transformer

Abstract: Tesla transformers are widely used in short pulse, repetition pulsed power generators. In this paper, a high repetitive rate intense electron beam accelerator (IEBA) based on high coupling (~1) Tesla transformer, which consists of a primary charging system, coaxial pulse forming line (PFL) charged by Tesla transformer and gas spark switch is described, especially stressed on the high coupling Tesla transformer. By introducing magnetic core to enhance the coupling factor between the primary and secondary windin… Show more

“…Coaxial HV vacuum insulators are widely used in the Teslatype pulsed power generators (Zhao et al, 2010;2013a;Peng et al, 2011;Liu et al, 2012) and others types of generators (Xun et al, 2008;Cheng et al, 2012). With a coaxial HV vacuum insulator, the proposed method to design composite insulation structures is exemplified.…”

“…Generally, there are three types of composite insulation structures: gas/solid insulators (Xiao et al, 2010;Peng et al, 2011;Shao et al, 2012;Zhao et al, 2013a), liquid/solid insulators (Wang et al, 2005;Cheng et al, 2012;Liu et al, 2012;Zhao et al, 2012;2013b;2013c), and vacuum/solid insulators (Kiricov et al, 2003;Milton, 1972;Miller, 1989;1993;Zhao et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2012;. These insulators play both the roles of separating a megavolt pulse voltage and presenting mechanical support.…”

“…To avoid the saturation of the magnetic material, the effective cross-sectional area of magnetic-core should be determined by the condition which the maximum deviation of magnetic induction in magnetic-core is less than the saturation magnetic induction of the material. The effective cross-sectional area of magnetic-core e A can be described in the expression [8].…”

“…Although used initially for the high-voltage testing of domestic and industrial power insulation and switchgear, in recent years they have become a vital requirement in many research areas, particularly those involving particle and plasma physics, as well as high power systems that involve the generation of microwave and X-ray radiation. Despite the original experiments being performed by Nikola Tesla (Lomas, 2000) well over a hundred years ago, with the typical and very spectacular results evident in Figure 1, important new applications still continue to arise in technically active countries worldwide e.g (Peng, Liu, Song, & Su, 2011;Novac, Wang, Smith, & Senior, 2014;Su et al, 2016). Tesla transformers are produced in several different constructional forms and they can be classified in a number of ways depending on the sometimes competing output requirements of extremely high voltage or high average power.…”
