A high prevalence of antibody to the hepatitis C virus in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in Japan

Abstract: In Japan, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers, with a reported fatality rate showing a consistent and significant increase in the last decade. At most, only 25% of HCC cases are positive for the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). To investigate a potential role for hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the development of HCC, sera from 105 HBsAg-negative HCC patients were collected from five districts of Japan and assayed for antibody to HCV antigen (HCVAb). A large number of these patie… Show more

“…In addition, we could not determine the hepatitis due to HBV or HCV, although approximately over 80% of liver cancer patients in Japan have antibodies to HCV. 22 Second, history of hepatitis and history of cirrhosis were not investigated in the A town, which led to the exclusion of one third of the study population. However, the HRs adjusted for several factors, including history of these conditions, are not substantially different from those adjusted for age only (Table II).…”

“…Hepatitis virus infection, alcohol consumption, and aflatoxin B1 are major factors for hepatocarcinogenesis (Hardell et al, 1984;Nishioka et al, 1991;Feitelson, 1999;Kops et al, 2004). However, mechanism of hepatic carcinogenesis is not well known.…”

“…(10) They designated the virus as HCV and devised an assay for serum antibodies to HCV (anti-HCV). (11) Data on the results from the assay demonstrated the high prevalence of anti-HCV among HCC patients, (12,13) and the possible association between HCC and HCV infection has been highlighted.…”
