A high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis of platinum carbide

Thin films in the Ti-Pt-C system were deposited by non-reactive, DC-magnetron sputtering.Samples were characterised using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. A previously not reported metastable solid solution carbide, (Ti 1-x Pt x )C y with a Pt/Ti ratio of up to 0.43 was observed. This solid solution phase was present both as single phase in polycrystalline samples, and together with amorphous carbon (a-C) in nanocomposite samples. Annealing of nanocomposite samples lead to decomposition of the solid solution phase and formation of a nc-TiC x /a-C/nc-Pt nanocomposite. Test sensors for automotive gas exhausts manufactured from such a three-phase material suffers from complete oxidation of the coating at 400 °C with no observed sensor activity.

First-principles density-functional method is used to study the recently high-pressure synthesized compound PtC. It is confirmed by our calculations that the platinum carbide has a zinc-blende ground-state phase at zero pressure and the rock-salt structure is a high-pressure phase. The theoretical transition pressure from zinc-blende to rock-salt is determined to be 52GPa. Furthermore, our calculation shows the possibility that the experimentally synthesized PtC by Ono et al. under high pressure condition might undergo a transition from rock-salt structure to zinc-blende after the pressure quench to ambient condition. Физика твердого тела, 2018, том 60, вып Посредством ab initio расчетов были изучены свойства серии гексагональных (Fe 2 N-подобных) суб-карбидов M 2 C, где M = Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, и рассчитаны их равновесные структурные параметры, электронные свойства, фазовая стабильность, константы упругости, модули сжатия, сдвига и Юнга, сжимаемость, индикатор Пуга, коэффициент Пуассона, индексы упругой анизотропии, а также твердость, температура Дебая, скорости звука, низкотемпературная теплоемкость. На основании полученных данных установлено, что все эти субкарбиды механически устойчивы, однако их энергии формирования E form относительно смеси d-металла и графита положительны. Кроме того, расчет фононных спектров этих субкарбидов показал наличие отрицательных мод, что указывает на их динамическую нестабильность. Таким образом, успешный синтез данных карбидов при нормальных условиях маловероятен.
