A High-Performance Gas-Fed Direct Ammonia Hydroxide Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Abstract: Recently, ammonia has become more attractive for carbon-neutral transportation. Both aqueous ammonia and gaseous ammonia can be utilized for direct ammonia hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (DAFCs). Using aqueous ammonia as feedstock for DAFCs presents significant drawbacks to practical stack operations, including higher ammonia crossover rate, increased probability of cathode flooding, and shunt currents. These drawbacks make gaseous ammonia the ideal feedstock for DAFCs. However, the main obstacle to ad… Show more

“…Zhao's recent work increased the peak power density of a gas-fed DAFC based on a polymer electrolyte by improving anode humidity (using a mixture of humidified N2 and dry NH3) and increasing temperature. Furthermore, the team determined that the performance loss was caused by AOR kinetics [99] using the model (polarization curves in Fig. 6(d)).…”

“…The third is Alkymer, a binder with excellent anion conductivity that was commonly applied in other anion-exchange membrane fuel cells , but never employed in AEM-DAFCs. Moreover, the multi-levels for binder content and cathode catalyst loading were developed based on the existing literature. ,,, Herein, the CCLs containing only catalyst and binder were prepared according to the orthogonal table, which took three factors (cathode catalyst loading, binder type, and binder content) and their corresponding three levels as parameters. As a result, nine groups of experiments were carried out.…”

“…10,[13][14][15] Recently, direct utilization of ammonia in fuel cells to generate electricity with high efficiency has been proposed and extensively studied. 2,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22] The direct ammonia fuel cell (DAFC) is an excellent alternative as an ammonia-fueled power source, especially for small-scale and domestic applications. [23][24][25] In DAFCs, the ammonia 4 oxidation reaction (AOR) occurs at the anode and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode.…”
