A high bit rate free space optics based ring topology having carrier‐less nodes

Abstract: A free space optics based ring topology that transmits full-duplex data to four different nodes in the ring is proposed. The link is designed such that the four nodes do not require a local optical source to transmit the uplink data. A wavelength division multiplexed signal composed of four different wavelengths each modulated by the downlink baseband data using differential phase shift keying is transmitted towards the nodes. At each node, the downlink baseband data is extracted and the received optical pulse… Show more

“…The FSO networks are immensely popular in health-care IoT, last mile connectivity and other closely heterogeneous networks [9]. The FSO communication systems are unlicensed, Line of Sight (LOS) based systems, which usually utilizes Laser (700-1600nm) as carrier modulation and the transmission propagates through free space between source and destination [10]. However, the environmental constraints like absorption and scattering phenomenon attenuate the signal integrity [11].…”

“…The most obvious characteristics of high frequency signal are high path loss, small radius, and the fact that they are heavily affected by obstructions and bad weather such as rain and snow [3]. For example, free space optics (FSO) communication, one of the leading-edge technologies, has a huge bandwidth, but the performance of FSO communication systems is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions and when strong turbulence is encountered, the optical signal will be severely disturbed [4]. In practical wireless communication systems, the effects of weather are unavoidable.…”

“…Long-haul optical fiber links are generally limited by various fiber centric impairments which result into signal degradation. Optical power loss is among the main factors which determines the power budget that can be used to extend the range of the link, the number of subscribers and the data rate per subscriber [1]. Therefore, compensation of the optical losses helps in realizing the long-haul optical networks.…”
