A high angiopoietin-2/angiopoietin-1 ratio is associated with a high risk of septic shock in patients with febrile neutropenia

Abstract: IntroductionEndothelial barrier breakdown is a hallmark of septic shock, and proteins that physiologically regulate endothelial barrier integrity are emerging as promising biomarkers of septic shock development. Patients with cancer and febrile neutropenia (FN) present a higher risk of sepsis complications, such as septic shock. Nonetheless, these patients are normally excluded or under-represented in sepsis biomarker studies. The aim of our study was to validate the measurement of a panel of microvascular per… Show more

“…Angiopoietin (Ang)-2 is an endothelium-specific growth factor regulated by pro-inflammatory stimuli able to increase vascular leakage. Serum Ang-2 levels are increased during sepsis and associated with disease severity (70). Soluble CD40 Ligand (sCD40L) shows pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory properties after binding to its cell surface receptor CD40.…”

“…These results are similar to the literature. 10,11 We could not distinguish FUO and CDI according to PCT levels. The highest level of PCT was found in MDI group in our study.…”

“…Therefore, new biomarkers have been investigated. [9][10][11] Endothelial barrier disruption plays a key role in the pathogenesis of sepsis and septic shock, making it an attractive target for studies aimed to identify new therapeutic targets for sepsis. 12 Recently, the participation of VEGF, a vascular growth factor with potent microvascular permeability functions, in the pathogenesis of septic shock was demonstrated.…”

“…With this function, we can interpret the relation between these three biomarkers and the sepsis severity from the associate weights, [28]. Even though these relations have been observed in clinical studies [10], [25], [26], we assert that our methodology is useful since it obtains similar results to those of the clinical studies using unbiased, rigorous statistical analyses. It also holds promise for the discovery of novel biomarkers.…”
