A Herpetological Survey of the James Bay Area of Québec and Ontario

Abstract: as part of a survey of a variety of taxa in the James Bay region of Ontario and Québec, we surveyed the herpetofauna of this region in order to exploit roads that have not been previously surveyed by herpetologists, to provide data for future comparisons, and to compare current observations with previous surveys (Schueler 1973;Schueler and Karstad 1975

“…These range margin declines are clearly an ongoing large scale phenomenon in the northeastern U.S. and Canada since the 1990s (Schueler, 1999). However, at broad geographical scales chorus frog ranges may be shifting, rather than simply retracting, because of possible P. maculata range expansions in northern Quebec (Ouellet et al, 2009;Desroches et al, 2010). If this finding is not simply due to increased survey efforts, the species will have recently crossed a major river system that was previously believed to be a barrier (Schueler, 1973).…”

“…Boreal chorus frogs may have undergone a sizeable range expansion on the far northern range margin at James Bay in Ontario and Quebec where the frogs inhabit open bogs (Ouellet et al, 2009) and brackish pools (Desroches et al, 2010). Unfortunately the paucity of historical surveys at this remote location makes it difficult to determine whether this finding is the result of a recent range expansion or earlier post-glacial reinvasion.…”

“…To my knowledge, this is the first reported case of communal oviposition of E. bislineata in Ontario. The range of the Northern Two-lined Salamander is surprisingly extensive in Ontario (Desroches et al 2010) and other eastern Canadian provinces (Cook 1984), but few researchers visit these regions. Continued observation of this species in the northernmost part of its range would be of value.…”
