A Helmholtz Energy Equation of State for Sulfur Dioxide

Abstract: A Helmholtz energy equation of state with independent variables of temperature and density was developed for sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) based on thermodynamic property data from the literature. The equation of state is valid from the triple-point temperature of 197.7 to 525 K, with pressures up to 35 MPa and densities up to 25.4 mol·dm −3 . The uncertainties in density of the equation of state are 0.1% in the liquid phase, 0.25% in the vapor phase, and 1% in the critical region. The uncertainty in vapor pressure i… Show more

“…The equation of state of Gao et al (K. Gao, Wu, Zhang, & Lemmon, 2016) was used to provide the density and the critical parameters. Lennard-Jones parameters were obtained from Hirschfelder, Curtiss, and Bird (Hirschfelder et al, 1964).…”

“…In order to ensure the correct behavior of the correlation and its derivatives at the critical point, the first temperature exponent must be between zero and one, with a positive coefficient n 1 . 29,30 The calculated values from Eq. (2) deviate from the results obtained from our EOS by less than 0.03% at temperatures up to 641 K. In the vicinity of the critical point, deviations increase to a maximum of 0.06%.…”

“…Thus, most modern reference EOS were developed with the same basic mathematical structure as presented in this section. Excellent examples are the equations for R-125 of Lemmon and Jacobsen, 45 for propane of Lemmon et al, 29 for R-1234ze(E) of Thol and Lemmon, 46 and for sulfur dioxide of Gao et al 30 In general, EOS in terms of the Helmholtz energy a can be formulated as aðT; rÞ 5 a o ðT; rÞ 1 a r ðT; rÞ:…”

“…The development of the correlation requires densities; Gao et al . 14 very recently developed an accurate, wide-ranging equation of state that is valid from the triple point up to 725 K and 1000 MPa. In the vapor phase, the uncertainties in density are 0.1% at temperatures between 410 K and 580 K with pressures below 100 MPa, and 0.05% at temperatures between 220 K and 400 K with pressures below 10 MPa.…”

“…Very recently, Gao et al . 14 developed a new equation of state for ammonia (including a slightly different critical point than the values used by Tillner-Roth et al. 13 ) The present work employs this new equation of state, and a) a new set of measurements of viscosity published by Laesecke et al .…”
