A healthy birth after intracytoplasmic sperm injection by using immotile testicular spermatozoa in a case with totally immotile ejaculated spermatozoa before and after Percoll gradients

Abstract: Total asthenozoospermia is a severe problem, as only a micromanipulation technique can assist the couple, and even then fertilization and pregnancy rates are very low. The first healthy birth, achieved by using testicular immotile spermatozoa in a case with total asthenozoospermia before and after Percoll gradient preparation, is reported.

“…In azoospermic patients it is frequently observed that more immotile than motile spermatozoa are obtained in TESE. But even the use of immotile spermatozoa either from the ejaculate (Kahraman et al, 1996;Nijs et al, 1996;Vandervorst et al, 1997;Wang et al, 1997;Barros et al, 1998) or extracted from a testicular biopsy (Nijs et al, 1996;Kahraman et al, 1997;Shulman et al, 1999) has succeeded in pregnancies, revealing that immotile spermatozoa can successfully fertilize.…”

“…Successful treatment of PCD with the birth of healthy babies following embryo transfer on day three or earlier has been reported using sub-zonal insemination (SUZI) [4][5][6] and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. The hypo-osmotic swelling (HOS) test [14] was used in conjunction with ICSI of immotile spermatozoa with success in several cases as well [15][16][17].…”

“…Rare and sporadic forms of male infertility which • are probably caused by mutations, such as globozoospermia (Lundin et al 1994;Bourne et al 1995;Liu et al 1995;Catt et al 1996;Battaglia et al 1997;Rybouchkin et al 1997;Tejera et al 2008, Fig. 23.10) and total sperm immotility (Nijs et al 1996;Casper et al 1996;Liu et al 1997;Kahraman et al 1997;Peeraer 2004). In these rare occasions the fertilization rate after ICSI seemed to be lower than the usual, which varies between 60-70%.…”
