A Hard Tick Relapsing Fever Group Spirochete in a BrazilianRhipicephalus(Boophilus)microplus

Abstract: Tick-borne diseases usually comprise a complex epidemiological and ecological network connecting the vector, pathogen, and a group of host species. Symptoms associated with Lyme disease have been reported in Brazil, but no Borrelia sp. has been definitively related to these events. Here we have identified a B. lonestari/B. theileri-related spirochete DNA in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus from Brazil. Four hundred R. microplus and 80 Amblyomma cajennense ticks were screened, and only 1 hors… Show more

“…DNA from deer blood was extracted using the Wizard ® genomic DNA purification kit (Promega,20 Madison, WI) by the recommended protocol using 3 ml of whole blood or unspun plasma or buffy 21 coat from 3 ml of blood sample. Tick DNA was extracted by using ammonium hydroxide (NH 4 OH) as Conventional PCR and sequencing 25 All deer blood DNA samples were examined using nested PCR to detect the Borrelia spp.…”

Other tick species could also play a relevant role in the ecology and epidemiology of the Brazilian lyme disease-like or Bagio Yoshinari syndrome (Mantovani et al, 2007;Yparraguirre et al, 2007;Yoshinari et al, 2010).…”
