A Haptoglobin-Like Glycoprotein is Produced by Implantation-Stage Rabbit Endometrium1

Abstract: A polypeptide of 42 kDa was previously identified in rabbit uterine epithelium during the peri-implantation period as a progesterone-dependent, stage-specific protein. Binding of the lectin RCA-I to the 42-kDa band on Western blots demonstrated that it was a glycoprotein, here designated GP42. With use of a polyclonal antiserum to this glycoprotein, strong immunostaining was present on the surface of epithelial cells in implantation-stage uteri (6-7 days pregnant). Uteri of 4-day pseudopregnant females had onl… Show more

“…7 We saw that a decrease in the β value from 0.458 to 0.387 at a CpG site in the HPR gene was associated with early pregnancy vs. the non-pregnant states. Others have noted increased HPR expression in pregnancy, [12][13][14] and although we did not measure either mRNA or protein levels, the altered DNA methylation we have shown may be one mechanism by which this occurs.…”

“…Previous results, coupled with the present findings, suggest that Hp is associated with lipoprotein particles after it is induced and released into plasma. In addition to the liver, Hp is synthesized by the lung [22], uterus [7] and adipocytes [4]. An analysis of charge differences of Hp species in different tissues and cells may be helpful to identify the origin of lipoprotein Hp.…”

“…a reduction in the thickness of the glycocalyx of uterine epithelial cells and in cell surface charge [Enders and Schlafke, 1977;Anderson et al, 1990;Morris and Potter, 1990;Carson et al, 1998a, b;Aplin, 1999;Niklaus et al, 2001] and/or the biosynthesis and expression of new cell surface proteins as well as of cell surface-bound glycoconjugates [Lampelo et al, 1985;Anderson et al, 1988;Kimber and Lindenberg, 1990;Hoffman et al, 1996;Carson et al, 1998b;Olson et al, 1998;Illingworth and Kimber, 1999;Niklaus et al, 1999]. However, a number of findings suggest that much more than the expression of apical membrane-associated molecules is changed in the uterine epithelium at acquisition of receptivity, i.e.…”
