A guideline to frame stressor effects in freshwater ecosystems

Abstract: Article 25fa states that the author of a short scientific work funded either wholly or partially by Dutch public funds is entitled to make that work publicly available for no consideration following a reasonable period of time after the work was first published, provided that clear reference is made to the source of the first publication of the work. This publication is distributed under The Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) 'Article 25fa implementation' project. In this project research out… Show more

“…The term stressor was applied following Perujo et al [30]. Multiple stressors included (i) hydromorphological (No1-10, Annex 2), (ii) chemical variables (No11-18, Annex 2), and (iii) combined drivers (No19-36, Annex 2).…”

“…These results that should be taken in account by ecosystem conservation managers and policymakers. Although these patterns are relatively consistent, our conclusions regarding the impact on biodiversity must be cautiously analysed, as we focus on bacterial biodiversity, and different patterns might have been detected if focusing on the fish community or the amphibia inhabiting the NSH (Perujo et al., 2021; Schafft et al., 2021). Thus, further research is needed to continue studying the impact of biodiversity related to recreational activity.…”

“…However, relationships between anthropogenic pressures and indicators are not always non-linear, aggravating the projection of magnitude or direction of impact. For instance, the temporal and spatial dimension of pressures as well as ecosystem sensitivity are mediating factors (Perujo et al, 2021), while also interaction among multiple pressures may occur (Jackson et al, 2016). Ecological effects of such interactions have already been reported for mountain lakes, for example, in context of nutrient introduction and warming (Oleksy et al, 2020).…”
