A guide to defining and implementing protocols for the welfare assessment of laboratory animals: eleventh report of the BVAAWF/FRAME/RSPCA/UFAW Joint Working Group on Refinement

Abstract: The refinement of husbandry and procedures to reduce animal suffering and improve welfare is an essential component of humane science. Successful refinement depends upon the ability to assess animal welfare effectively, and detect any signs of pain or distress as rapidly as possible, so that any suffering can be alleviated. This document provides practical guidance on setting up and operating effective protocols for the welfare assessment of animals used in research and testing. It sets out general principles … Show more

“…The rats were housed at the vivarium of the Instituto de Microbiología y Parasitología Médica (IMPaM), Universidad de Buenos Aires and CONICET. Animal care was in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the National Institutes of Health (22). The use of the rat osteomyelitis model was evaluated by the "Comisión Institucional para el Cuidado y Uso de Animales de Laboratorio" (CICUAL), Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Buenos Aires, and approved through resolution CD 1938/07.…”

“…Existen acuerdos y orientaciones sobre las condiciones que deben reunir los bioterios, conforme al tipo de animal que se tiene en ellos (Hawkins et al 2011). La tercera «R» de Russell y Burch (1959), el refinamiento, supone el mejoramiento constante de las técnicas de manejo para reducir el sufrimiento y aumentar el bienestar de los animales que se tienen en cautiverio y se utilizan con fines científicos.…”

“…The challenges of analysing the large amounts of data generated by automated systems (Tecott and Nestler, 2004;Spruijt and DeVisser, 2006) and transforming data into information that is meaningful in terms of animal health and welfare must also be overcome to harness the true power of automated technologies. Finally, because there are practical and technological limitations with automation, homecage technologies should never be used as a substitute to regular clinical monitoring carried out by experienced, compassionate staff (Hawkins, 2002;Hawkins et al, 2011;Hawkins, 2014) instead be used to provide supplemental monitoring.…”
