Objectives: This study examined the association between perceived organizational support (POS) and COVID-19 vaccine intention and the influence of the implementation of workplace infection prevention measures. Methods: We analyzed 23,846 workers using data from an Internet survey of workers aged 20-65 years conducted in December 2020, during a period of widespread COVID-19 infection in Japan. Results: A higher POS was associated with a higher intention to vaccinate. The relationship between POS and vaccine intention was attenuated when adjusted for infection prevention measures in the workplace. Conclusions: In workplaces where POS is present, a sense of responsibility to the group and altruistic behavior may arise. This means employees act to acquire herd immunity to protect others, which may result in increased vaccine intention. The association between POS and vaccination intention was attenuated by adjusting for workplace infection prevention measures, which suggested that infection prevention measures may be a confounding factor or that POS created a health climate that promoted infection prevention measures. The results suggest that working to improve employee well-being and implementing appropriate workplace infection prevention measures during infectious disease outbreaks may promote vaccination behavior and contribute to the acquisition of herd immunity in the community.

Association between preventive measures against workplace infection and preventive behavior against personal infection

To prevent the spread of infection, it is necessary for each individual to adopt infection prevention behavior. We investigated the effect of infection control measures implemented in the workplace on personal infection prevention behavior. We conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey through the Internet from December 22 to 25, 2020, during which period coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was spreading. Among respondents aged 20 to 65 years (n=27,036), 21,915 workers were included in the analysis. The results showed that as the number of infection control measures in the workplace increased, implementation of infection prevention behavior by individuals also significantly increased. However, the relationship differed depending on the type of personal infection prevention behavior. Specifically, infection control measures against COVID-19 in the workplace may affect personal infection prevention behavior. Implementation of infection control measures in the workplace increases awareness of the importance of individual infection prevention behavior and its implementation by all individuals. These findings may be applicable not only to COVID-19 measures but also to responses to other emerging infections and seasonal influenza.

Automated COVID-19 and Heart Failure Detection Using DNA Pattern Technique with Cough Sounds

COVID-19 and heart failure (HF) are common disorders and although they share some similar symptoms, they require different treatments. Accurate diagnosis of these disorders is crucial for disease management, including patient isolation to curb infection spread of COVID-19. In this work, we aim to develop a computer-aided diagnostic system that can accurately differentiate these three classes (normal, COVID-19 and HF) using cough sounds. A novel handcrafted model was used to classify COVID-19 vs. healthy (Case 1), HF vs. healthy (Case 2) and COVID-19 vs. HF vs. healthy (Case 3) automatically using deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) patterns. The model was developed using the cough sounds collected from 241 COVID-19 patients, 244 HF patients, and 247 healthy subjects using a hand phone. To the best our knowledge, this is the first work to automatically classify healthy subjects, HF and COVID-19 patients using cough sounds signals. Our proposed model comprises a graph-based local feature generator (DNA pattern), an iterative maximum relevance minimum redundancy (ImRMR) iterative feature selector, with classification using the k-nearest neighbor classifier. Our proposed model attained an accuracy of 100.0%, 99.38%, and 99.49% for Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3, respectively. The developed system is completely automated and economical, and can be utilized to accurately detect COVID-19 versus HF using cough sounds.
