A group-mediated, home-based physical activity intervention for patients with peripheral artery disease: effects on social and psychological function

Abstract: BackgroundPAD is a disabling, chronic condition of the lower extremities that affects approximately 8 million people in the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an innovative home-based walking exercise program for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) improves self-efficacy for walking, desire for physical competence, satisfaction for physical functioning, social functioning, and acceptance of PAD related pain and discomfort.MethodsThe design was a 6-month randomized contr… Show more

“…This finding was recently confirmed by others reporting that the improvement in self-efficacy, satisfaction with functioning, pain acceptance, and social functioning after 6 months of home based walking exercise compared with a non-exercising control group was independent of walking performance. 42 In combination with the finding of the present study that walking capacity might be of diminished value, a shift in SET treatment paradigm seems necessary. Future research should therefore focus on the optimization of SET programs other than increasing walking capacity alone (intrinsic motivation, lifestyle, patient satisfaction and expectations, social functioning, etc.…”

“…High levels of sedentary time have twice the all‐cause mortality risk when compared to people who have low sedentary time . Greater physical activity for people with DM and PAD is associated with greater physical function, psychosocial functioning, and quality of life . Furthermore, small increases in physical activity can decrease risk of cardiovascular events and all‐cause mortality, suggesting that increased physical activity should be a critical target of rehabilitation interventions for people with dysvascular LLA …”

Rata-rata tekanan darah sistolik pada kelompok kontrol dan kelompok intervensi adalah 129,8 mmHg dan 138,9 mmHg, dengan standar deviasi 8,8 dan 8,1.…”
