A group approach to genetic counselling of cardiomyopathy patients: satisfaction and psychological outcomes sufficient for further implementation

Abstract: The introduction of next-generation sequencing in everyday clinical genetics practise is increasing the number of genetic disorders that can be confirmed at DNA-level, and consequently increases the possibilities for cascade screening. This leads to a greater need for genetic counselling, whereas the number of professionals available to provide this is limited. We therefore piloted group genetic counselling for symptomatic cardiomyopathy patients at regional hospitals, to assess whether this could be an accept… Show more

“…Patient satisfaction was high in both formats. A pilot study of group genetic counseling for symptomatic cardiomyopathy patients showed an increase in perceived personal control and a decrease in anxiety . Other models studied in the cancer genetic setting, such as telegenetics and a DVD presentation followed by shorter in person genetic counseling, have shown feasibility and acceptability of these approaches when compared with traditional genetic counseling …”

“…The systems perspective applied in this study presents a holistic and nuanced view of processes, influences and interactions. Many studies have examined processes and interactions at the unit level [ 32 ] or focused on a specific group of patients [ 33 ] or health professionals [ 34 ]. Others have looked at global endeavours in genomic medicine [ 16 ], describing and contrasting genomic programs in different countries.…”

“…The GCOS-18 shows a satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's a ¼ 0.77) and excellent test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient ¼ 0.92) [25]. Anxiety was measured with the short 6item version of the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), which is validated for measuring the psychological outcome of genetic counselling [21,27,28]. Questions on baseline characteristics were included in the first questionnaire (demographic characteristics) and extracted from medical records if consent was obtained (information on epilepsy and genetic testing results).…”
