A “greenhouse gas balance” for aviation in line with the Paris Agreement

Abstract: The effects of aviation on climate pose unique policy challenges. A large fraction of the CO2 emissions (65%) is international and not (explicitly) included in the Paris Agreement. The interpretation of Article 4.1 on achieving a “balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases” is ambiguous in the context of aviation because of the substantial non‐CO2 effects associated with the sector. For the achievement of the temperature goal in Article 2, both CO2 and non‐CO2 … Show more

“…32 How 'net zero' relates to aviation is also complicated by its non-CO 2 emissions, and the fact that international aviation emissions are not explicitly identied in the agreement and fall outside of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), whereas the Kyoto Protocol gave specic responsibility for international aviation emissions to ICAO. 24 4 Combustion, emissions, and fuels…”

“…The International Civil Aviation organization (ICAO) serves as a United Nations entity responsible for international coordination in the sector. However, its existing climate strategy has drawn critique for perceived insufficiency in ambition and means to meet the Paris Agreement's goal , Lyle 2018, Pathak et al 2022, Fuglestvedt et al 2023. Hence, national efforts formulated in the NDCs could play an important role in mitigating aviation emissions.…”

“…The environmental impact of commercial aviation has gained significant attention as a prominent industry challenge. While studies of aviation's climate impacts have primarily focused only on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, recent research has highlighted the importance of non-CO 2 emissions, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx), water vapor, and aerosols (soot and sulfates) [1][2][3]. In certain atmospheric conditions, exhaust heat, water vapor, and aerosols mix with the background atmosphere to form condensation trails (contrails) [4].…”
