Smart city initiatives rely on real-time measurements and data collected by a large number of heterogenous physical sensors deployed throughout a city. Physical sensors, however, are fraught with interoperability, dependability, management, and political challenges. Furthermore, these sensors are unable to sense the opinions and emotional reactions of citizens that invariably impact smart city initiatives. Yet everyday, millions of dwellers and visitors of a city share their observations, thoughts, feelings, and experiences, or in other words, their perceptions about their city through social media updates. This paper reasons why "human sensors", namely, citizens that share information about their surroundings via social media can supplement, complement, or even replace the information measured by physical sensors. We present a methodology based on probabilistic language modeling to extract and visualize such perceptions that may be relevant to smart cities from social media updates. Using more than six million geo-tagged tweets collected over regions that feature widely varying geographical, social, cultural, and political characteristics and tweet densities, we illustrate the potential of social media enabled human sensing to address diverse smart city challenges.

Tremendous technology development in the field of Internet of Things (IoT) has changed the way we work and live. Although the numerous advantages of IoT are enriching our society, it should be reminded that the IoT also consumes energy, embraces toxic pollution and E-waste. These place new stress on the environments and smart world. In order to increase the benefits and reduce the harm of IoT, there is an increasing desire to move toward green IoT. Green IoT is seen as the future of IoT that is environmentally friendly. To achieve that, it is necessary to put a lot of measures to reduce carbon footprint, conserve fewer resources, and promote efficient techniques for energy usage. It is the reason for moving towards green IoT, where the machines, communications, sensors, clouds, and internet are alongside energy efficiency and reducing carbon emission. This paper presents a thorough survey of the current on-going research work and potential technologies of green IoT with an intention to provide some clues for future green IoT research.

The "Internet of Things" radically changes the view of the "Internet" by embracing every physical object into network. The vision of "IoT" promises to enhance the capabilities of objects and forms a smart environment so that people will benefit from the IoT revolution. As the global population grows, the resources on earth are depleted quickly. In order to have a sustainable earth, governments around the world put a lot of efforts to advocate the reduction of carbon production as well as to emphasize the benefits of reducing the consumption of energy. The proposition has been promoted on campus of educational institutions as well. Smart campus is a trendy application in the paradigm of the IoT. This research adopts the concept of the "Internet of Things" to construct a green campus environment which will realize the idea of energy saving. The architecture of the construction of green campus is established and three application systems have been developed as well. The efforts of this work allow the campus to manage the computer labs and the air conditioners more efficiently. The sensor network will save more energy since data are reported periodically and the analysis will be carried out in time to locate the problems.
