A green approach to femtocells capacity improvement by recycling wasted resources

Abstract: Abstract-In this contribution we propose a method to increase the energy efficiency of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based femtocells. This is accomplished with no impact to the current power consumption, radio frequency (RF) circuitry, link adaptation strategies, bandwidth and transmit power. The proposed technique recycles redundant resources of OFDM transmissions (e.g., guard bands and cyclic prefixes), introduced to combat frequency selectivity. We borrow the underlying idea from a tech… Show more

“…There have been some results on VFDM implementation in a VFDM standalone transceiver pair [15] or a two transmitter -two receiver scenario, where both transmitters are implemented on the same baseband transceiver, called hybrid transceiver [16]. This hybrid transceiver approach for cognitive network deployment was proposed in [17].…”

“…Unfortunately, an analytic optimization of the power sharing strategy between the OFDM and CIA signals is not feasible. The interested reader may refer for further details to [22], where a similar signal model (even though arising from a different approach) characterizes this issue. Thus, numerical iterative approaches are the only viable option to identify suitable values for P M and P C .…”

“…Interestingly, the adaptivity of the approach described so far can be increased if we depart from the purely parametric approach by means of δ and adopt a flexible and modular structure for the OFDM transmission [27]. From a practical point of view, the level of self-sustainability that can be achieved by means of the proposed approach hinges on the amount of power carried by the CP.…”
