Airport Sustainability Awareness: A Theoretical Framework

Recently, society has had a growing concern about the sustainability of airports in social, economic, and environmental terms and a perception that stakeholders have not adequately addressed this concern. The importance of sustainability awareness, especially in the airport sector, has recently increased as its operations increase greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption and cause other environmental issues. Hence, applying sustainable airport practices can allow airports to improve their economic and social effects and reduce their harmful environmental impact. In response to the growing concern regarding the quality of sustainability practices, this paper aims to allow researchers to investigate airport sustainability awareness (ASA) by studying the relationship between airport sustainability knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of airport sustainability practices and illustrating the gap in the literature on the related topics through a systematic review. Additionally, the study provides a bibliometric method to examine the keywords’ relation. The results focus on developing a theoretical framework to investigate ASA and reveal the need to investigate the relationship between knowledge and attitude to improve sustainable behavior for achieving sustainable development goals. This contributes to the literature gap regarding ASA. The research limitations are open issues for future researchers to promote sustainability awareness.

The increase in air transportation demand implies challenges on airport ground access. Using private transportation mode to reach the airport is a typical practice which results in the vast demand for parking facilities. These facilities are located farther from the terminal, increasing the access time. This research aimed to develop the concept of an advance airport Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) that connects parking facilities to the terminal as a shuttle service, and provides on-board integrated flight-related services, such as check-in and baggage handling. The system architecture and operational models were developed, thus all relevant components and functions were identified, especially focusing on information management tasks. A questionnaire survey was performed and conducted at Budapest Airport to reveal the user expectations towards an advanced PRT service at the airport. Moreover, a layout selection method was developed which was applied to Budapest Airport as a case study. The proposed PRT service provides a seamless transit by access to airport terminals from remote parking facilities conveniently and the time consumption of flight-related activities is significantly reduced too.

This study will dissect the influence of green human resources and capital on corporate stewardship by managing green environmental administration. The participants in this study were workers at PERTAMINA’s Rewul, Fuel Terminal, with a complete sample of 125 representatives. The data testing strategy uses the Structural Equation Model Partial Least Square. The results of this study found that green human resources and green social capital significantly affect the carrying capacity of the company, eirectly by intervening in the administration of the green environment; besides that, green environmental governance also has a significant impact on the sustainability of the company. On the other hand, green structural capital does not directly affect company sustainability but becomes a substantial effect by mediating green environmental management. In order to maintain sustainability, continuous improvement projects are carried out to support green innovation in implementing green technology in resource utilization and preserving the environment while still involving external parties. The company is committed to implementing the highest occupational health and safety standards, respecting and affecting the surrounding community to promote sustainable social and economic development.
