The emerging taxi services, for instance, Uber and Lyft, are challenging traditional fully regulated taxi markets. Transportation agencies are spending significant efforts to understand the optimal pricing and fleet size taxis that are efficient for a given urban area. This study develops a modeling framework for studying a decentralized equilibrium based market study where the fare is strictly regulated by a taxi commission. The nature of demand‐supply equilibria with stochastic demand are discussed to determine optimal development strategies, for instance, number of issued licenses and fare setting. Two Stackelberg games are formulated to specify leader‐follower relationships between transportation authorities and and the followers — taxi drivers and passengers. An iterative approach is designed to simulate the games and solve corresponding mathematical optimization problems. The case study is based on New York City data which shows that the taxi market may be oversupplied and underpriced, which confirms findings from other studies and price hikes in 2012. Furthermore, different development strategies are proposed based on two Stackelberg games to respond to intended taxi system changes, such as price and quantity elasticity of taxi demand, levels of demand variance, average taxi operation speed, passengers' waiting time value, and taxi service coverage. The results have important implications in determining development strategies for taxi industry with emerging taxi services, stochastic demand, and the rapidly changing environment.

An efficiency measure for road transportation networks with application to two case studies Håkan Terelius Karl Henrik JohanssonAbstract-Enabling efficient transportation is a major challenge for large cities, as the transportation need is increasing, while the environmental impact has to be minimized. In this paper, we define an efficiency measure that shows how much of the current transportation mileage that is really necessary to meet all the transportation assignments. We show that the efficiency measure can be computed efficiently as a minimum cost flow, and we apply it on two case studies. The first case demonstrate the efficiency measure on a freight transportation system, and the second case computes the measure for a large real-world data set from the New York City taxis.

Since their launch in the early 1990's, recommender systems (RSs) have played an essential role in information filtering and providing personalized information to users by utilizing the web, mobile, context, personalized, and practical applications. Many research articles have been published in various application domains such as movies, books, documents, news, images, music, shopping, TV programs, tourism, group, social, taxi, and others. However, from these domains, taxi recommendation is a new and thrust area of research, as publications in this domain are few and recently published.Taxi recommendations are associated with drivers-passengers with their: behavior, hotspots, trajectory, point of interest, route planning or prediction, taxi finding, anomaly or fraud detection, urban computing, mobility patterns and so forth. Due to this diversity and various agendas in taxi recommendations, more exploration is required, as it is a less mature and growing field than other domains. So we have done a literature review in the taxi domain by classification, incorporating reputed articles published from 2001 to August 2022. We include the reputed papers which highlight, analyze and perform studies only on the taxi domain. This article categorizes and discusses the research and development in taxi recommendations as nature, approaches, algorithms, methods, datasets, models, devices, information, and evaluation techniques. This survey article will actively help the researchers and professionals understand the current situations in taxi RS and resolve future trends, opportunities, and research.
