A Gold(I) [2]Catene

Abstract: Two interlocking Au6 rings, whose individual metal atoms are linked through ethynyl ligands, are present in the title compound [{Au(C  CtBu)}6]2. This novel homoleptic organometallic [2]catenane spontaneously self‐assembles in the reaction of [Au(NH3)2]BF4 with tBuC  CH. Weak AuAu interactions may contribute to the self‐assembly of the structure. The bonding in one ring is shown schematically on the right.

“…Thus, in both complexes the metal has a pseudo-tetrahedral environment, as might be expected for a d 10 ion with four carbon donors. A similar arrangement of ligands was observed in the copper ± manganese acetylide complex {Cu[Mn(CO) 3 (dppe)(m-CCtBu)] 2 }-PF 6 , [3] which showed an average Cu ± C distance of 2.081(1) and a dihedral angle of 71(1)8. The average CC bond lengths (4) in the crystal (20 % probability ellipsoids).…”

“…Teflon or steel tubes were used to transfer dried solvents and air-sensitive solutions. Compounds [Cu(NCCH 3 ) 4 ]PF 6 , [15] [Ag(NCCH 3 ) 4 ]BF 4 , [16] Ph 3 PAuCl, [17] Me 2 SAuCl, [18] (OC) 5 ReCCRe(CO) 5 (1), [9] and (OC) 5 ReCCSiMe 3 (2) [8] were prepared according to slightly modified literature procedures. Other compounds were used as purchased.…”

“…The 'simple' alkynyls, [AuCϵCR] n , probably do not give linear polymers, although structural information is available only for R = Bu t ; in this case, pairs of intercalated hexameric rings are formed (15). A possible improvement is to use an aromatic para-dialkyne to obtain [-Au-CϵC-Ar-CϵC-] n , which can be obtained from Me 2 SAuCl and the di-yne (16).…”
