“…Retiboletus ornatipes/retipes were described from Central and North America (Binder & Bresinsky, 2002;Ortiz-Santana et al, 2007;Zeng et al, 2016) while R. kauffmanii and R. sinensis were both described from China, and R. brevibasidiatus from Thailand. As previously found in a number of ectomycorrhizal mushroom genera, including bolete genera, specimens from different continents that were previously thought to be conspecific were frequently shown to belong to different species (e.g., Feng et al, 2012;Badou et al, 2018;Davoodian et al, 2018;Delgat et al, 2019). Biogeographical evidence could, therefore, also be useful to separate species when morphological differences are limited.…”

“…Two datasets, the atp6 dataset and the combined nrLSU and ITS dataset, were analysed using RAxML (Stamatakis et al 2008). DNA sequences of the cyanescent species of Gyroporus from China and other continents (Crous et al 2016(Crous et al , 2017Das et al 2017;Davoodian et al 2018;Magnago et al 2018) were used to infer the phylogenetic relationships between these species. Since seven cyanescent species have been reported from the Southern Hemisphere continent of Australia and their atp6 sequences are publicly available, the atp6 dataset was used to infer relationships of Australian cyanescent species with those from Europe, North America and East Asia in the Northern Hemisphere.…”

“…More than 40 species have been reported and described in this genus (e.g. Li et al 2003;Kirk et al 2008;Vizzini et al 2015;Crous et al 2016Crous et al , 2017Das et al 2017;Davoodian et al 2018Davoodian et al , 2019Davoodian et al , 2020Magnago et al 2018). Gyroporus is characterised by the initially spongy and then hollow stipe, the white to cream to yellow hymenophore, the white to yellowish context without colour change or with cyanescent or brownish colour change when bruised, the ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores and the presence of clamp connections (Singer 1986;Watling 2008;Magnago et al 2018).…”

“…In spite of having a wide distribution, our specimen coincides with the concept of Ortiz-Santana et al (2007), with smaller basidiospores than the European-North American concept (6-8 × 3-4 μm vs. 8-13 × 5-6 μm). Davoodian et al (2018) concluded that G. castaneus is a complex species with representatives in Europe and North America (including Central America) as well as eastern Eurasia.…”
