Hypertension, causing cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart failure, has been a rising health issue worldwide. Black soybeans and adzuki beans have been widely consumed throughout history due to various bioactive components. We evaluated the antihypertensive effects of black soybean and adzuki bean ethanol extracts on blood pressure, renin-angiotensin system (RAS), and aortic lesion in spontaneously hypertensive rats. A group of WKY (normal) and six groups of spontaneously hypertensive rats were administered with saline (SHR), 50 mg/kg of captopril (CAP), 250 and 500 mg/kg of black soybean extracts (BE250 and BE500), 250 and 500 mg/kg of adzuki bean extracts (AE250 and AE500) for eight weeks. BE250, BE500, AE250, and AE500 significantly (p < 0.05) reduced relative liver weight, AST, ALT, triglyceride, total cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, and angiotensin-converting-enzyme level compared to SHR. The angiotensin II level in AE500 and renin mRNA expression in BE500 and AE500 were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased compared to SHR. The lumen diameter was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced in only CAP. Furthermore, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and angiotensin II level in AE500 were lower than those of BE500. These results suggest that AE exhibit more antihypertensive potential than BE in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Association between rs20456 and rs6930913 of Kinesin-Like Family 6 and Hypertension in a Chinese Cohort

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between kinesin-like family 6 (KIF6) polymorphisms and hypertension in a northeast Chinese cohort. In this study, two single nucleotide polymorphisms of KIF6 (rs20456 and rs6930913) and their haplotype were analyzed in 382 hypertension patients and 378 controls with SHEsis analysis platform, and the gene-environmental interactions were evaluated with logistic regression analysis. After adjusting for confounding factors, significantly lower risk of hypertension was observed in participants with genotype TC (0.416 (CI 0.299–0.578), p < 0.001 ) and CC (0.577 (0.389–0.857), p = 0.007 ) of rs20456 compared with TT. For rs6930913, allele T (0.522 (0.386–0.704), p < 0.001 ), genotype TT (0.325 (0.205–0.515), p < 0.001 ), and genotype CT (0.513 (0.379–0.693), p < 0.001 ) were significantly associated with lower risk of hypertension than allele C and CC genotype, respectively. Gene-environment analyses confirmed the significant influence on hypertension by the interactions between genotypes distribution in rs20456 (CT: p = 0.036 , TT: p = 0.022 ) and smoking status. No interactions were found between smoking and rs6930913, except those with dominant or recessive genetic models (both P s = 0.006 ). There were no interactions between KIF6 and overweight (all P s > 0.05 ). Haplotype analyses showed that CC ( p = 0.005 ) and TC ( p = 0.001 ) of rs20456 and rs6930913 were significantly associated with a statistically increased risk of hypertension. The false-positive report probability (FPRP) analysis was used to verify significant findings. In conclusions, KIF6 might affect the susceptibility of hypertension. The allele C (rs20456) and allele T (rs690913) were inclined to protect individuals from hypertension both in genotype and haplotype analyses.

IntroductionThe interactions between ARAS, independent on severity, and cardiovascular risk, and mortality are complex and not fully researched. The aim of this study was the assessment of the risk of cardiovascular events and mortality in patients with hemodynamically non-significant (NS-RAS) and significant renal artery stenosis (S-RAS) diagnosed with ultrasonography.Material and methodsThe study group consisted of all consecutive patients (n = 2,059) who underwent Doppler ultrasound of the renal arteries during a four years’ time. The patients were divided, according to the renal aortic ratio (RAR) into: hemodynamically significant RAS (S-RAS; RAR ≥ 3.5), hemodynamically non-significant RAS (NS-RAS; 1 < RAR < 3.5) and normal RAR (control group; RAR ≤ 1). The risk of cardiovascular events and death was estimated using Cox’s proportional hazard model including severity of RAS, age and gender, based on the data from the National Health Fund on causes of hospitalization, deaths and statistics on percutaneous coronary angioplasty procedures.ResultsS-RAS was found in 112 patients (5.4 %), NS-RAS in 313 patients (15.2 %) and 1634 patients (79.4 %) were qualified to control group. NS-RAS group had an increased risk of stroke (7.0 % vs. 3.0 %; HR 1.77; p = 0.032). S-RAS patients were at increased risk of heart failure (16.1 % vs. 5.2 %, HR 2.19; p = 0.002) and death (19.6 % vs. 4.3 %; HR 3.08; p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe presence of hemodynamically non-significant renal artery stenosis is an indicator of systemic atherosclerotic changes in vital organs and an important cardiovascular risk factor for stroke.
