A “Global Interdependence” Approach to Multidimensional Sequence Analysis

Abstract: While sequence analysis has now become a widespread approach in social sciences, several strategies have been developed to handle the specific issue of multidimensional sequences. These strategies have distinct characteristics, related to the way they explicitly emphasize multidimensionality, interdependence and parsimony. In this context, we introduce an original approach based on structural links between the dimensions, combining Optimal Matching Analysis (OMA), Multidimensional Scaling (MDS), canonical Part… Show more

“…Specifically, we examine (i) the correlations of family trajectories between teenage mothers and fathers, and their progenitors and (ii) the antecedents of any observed intergenerational correlations. Our study extends the emerging trajectory-based research on intergenerational linkages in family development on general populations (Liefbroer and Elzinga 2012;Raab et al 2014;Robette et al, 2015) by focusing on non-normative family patterns and a vulnerable subpopulation. The study, thus, offers an opportunity to expand knowledge on potential mechanisms behind persistent disadvantage related to family dynamics.…”

“…Alternative ways to derive MD distances from domain distances, such as Robette et al (2015) GIMSA method, are based on principal coordinates of the sequences derived from the dissimilarity matrix in each domain. Unlike additive tricks, such methods do not require any independence assumption, but they are hard to calibrate Note: Indel = insertion or deletion; INDELSLOG = frequency-based method for estimating indel and substitution costs.…”

“…We call this method the "distance additive trick" (DAT). One can also use more elaborate methods based on numerical representations of sequences to derive MD distances from domain distances (e.g., Robette, Bry, and Lelie `vre 2015). The fourth strategy-cross-classifying the typologies of the different domains-is not very popular because it produces rapidly too many and often sparse MD types when the number of types per domain increases (Raab and Struffolino 2022:chap.…”
