A global compilation of dissolved iron measurements: focus on distributions and processes in the Southern Ocean

Abstract: Abstract. Due to its importance as a limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth in large regions of the world's oceans, ocean water column observations of concentration of the trace-metal iron (Fe) have increased markedly over recent decades. Here we compile >13 000 global measurements of dissolved Fe (dFe) and make this available to the community. We then conduct a synthesis study focussed on the Southern Ocean, where dFe plays a fundamental role in governing the carbon cycle, using four regions, six basins a… Show more

“…8d) is triggered by a larger meridional flux convergence in the 2090s, observed at around 150 • E (Fig. 8f); Tagliabue et al (2012), with subsequent subsetting (see the "ALL-COAST-OUT" subset of Misumi et al, 2013). Scatter plots comparing the observed data with the simulated results in the 1990s in the upper 100 m (c).…”

“…Figure 8 shows the distribution of iron at three different depth ranges for the model and for the observations. The observational distributions come from the recently published database of Tagliabue et al (2012) augmented with about 1000 recent observations. The data set can be downloaded from http://pcwww.liv.ac.uk/~atagliab.…”
