A glimpse under the rim - the composition of microbial biofilm communities in domestic toilets

Abstract: Aim:  To determine the microbial composition of biofilms in domestic toilets by molecular means. Methods and Results:  Genomic DNA was extracted from six biofilm samples originating from households around Düsseldorf, Germany. While no archaeal 16S rRNA or fungal ITS genes were detected by PCR, fingerprinting of bacterial 16S rRNA genes revealed a diverse community in all samples. These communities also differed considerably between the six biofilms. Using the Ribosomal Database Project (RDP) classifier tool, 2… Show more

“…This does not indicate that they are not being deposited, but that the commensals may not be able to compete or subsist under the conditions of the cave. The loss of commensal species from an environment contaminated by human waste (German toilets) has previously been described (Egert et al, 2010). There the source of the endemic species was determined to be from the environment (from flushing) and this may be the case here; the environmental source is the cave itself.…”

“…A great diversity of bacterial community in the biofilms formed on the surface of toilet bowls has been already demonstrated by both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. [9][10][11][12] However, there is only limited information yet available for transient and temporal growth of biofilms on toilet bowls. The aim of this study was to shed light on the transition of biofilm formation on toilet bowls and characterize one of the early colonizers.…”

“…The average household has a large number of potential habitats for colonization by a diversity of microorganisms. Studies investigating biofilm formation in domestic toilet bowls determined that there is a large amount of variation in the types of bacteria found in toilets and that the majority of the bacteria identified originated from environmental sources (Egert et al 2009). Similarly, an investigation into the biofilms found in household drains was carried out, and the diversity between different drains was apparent (McBain et al 2003).…”
