A GIS Tool for Mapping Dam-Break Flood Hazards in Italy

Abstract: Mapping the delineation of areas that are flooded due to water control infrastructure failure is a critical issue. Practical difficulties often present challenges to the accurate and effective analysis of dam-break hazard areas. Such studies are expensive, lengthy, and require large volumes of incoming data and refined technical skills. The creation of cost-efficient geospatial tools provides rapid and inexpensive estimates of instantaneous dam-break (due to structural failure) flooded areas that complement, b… Show more

“…The decision to implement the hydro-amelioration work included in simulation 3 is supported by the comparative analysis of all implemented simulations, being the most viable in terms of implementation-operation costs, as well as in terms of ameliorating impact on the studied ravine [50][51][52].…”

“…Although information on dam breaks is numerous, no pattern has yet been identified regarding the shape of the breach, its location within the dam, or the time formation. To estimate breach characteristics, four methods can be used: (i) comparative analysis of the analyzed dam with another similar historical dam failure [23,66]; (ii) regression equations developed from historical dam failures [23,44,67]; (iii) using the velocity vs. erosion rates [23]; (iv) using computer models and principles of hydraulics [23,59,[68][69][70][71]. In this case, we used regression equations to estimate the dam breach characteristics [44].…”

“…It assesses BS into "correct" and "incorrect" classification, while other methods work on the relationship between the burned area and BS classes (Eskandari, 2017;Leuenberger et al, 2018;Gigović et al, 2019;). Not so widely used in BS studies, sensitivity analysis is another validation method widely used in model validation in other areas of science (Albano et al, 2019;Arabameri et al, 2019;De Araújo Carvalho et al, 2020;Lee et al, 2020).…”
