A geomorphodiversity map of the Soutpansberg Range, South Africa

Abstract: Within the emerging broad science of geodiversity, geomorphological diversity (geomorphodiversity) assesses the form of surface features of a place or region. This paper uses SRTM data and GIS techniques to assess geomorphological diversity of the Soutpansberg range, in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Suitable factors to assess geomorphological diversity were identified as geology, slope position, soil erodibility, landform position, relative heights, insolation, hydrography and ruggedness. Each factor was nor… Show more

“…Creating a synthetic map of geodiversity for such a large area as the Western Carpathians is not easy, mainly due to the generalization of component maps, where it is not always possible to notice small elements that may undoubtedly be important from the point of view of geotourism. However, such maps are also needed to designate areas predisposing for more detailed geodiversity analyzes or the creation of geoparks, such as in Brazil (de Paula Silva et al, 2021;Dias et al, 2021), Hungary (Pál and Albert, 2021), Portugal (Pereira et al, 2012), or South Africa (Kori et al, 2019). It is true that the methodology of the above-mentioned analyzes is quite different from the one presented in this article, but in all the examples, it can be seen that the relief diversity plays a major role in creating a geodiversity map.…”

“…Ours was the first assessment of geodiversity for the study area. Nine factors, collectively considered necessary for physical landscape evolution [50], were included in the index. These factors were: soil diversity, geological diversity, local relief, landform taxa, terrain ruggedness, slope position, hydrography, and topographic wetness (TWI).…”

“…As a result, this rainfall trend offers conducive climatic conditions for agriculture and forestry (Maponya et al 2019). Thus, the slopes of the south-eastern part of the mountain range are dominated by various farming activities such as agriculture, forestry, and tea plantations (Kori et al 2018). Native tree species are retained in and outside homesteads.…”
