A genome-wide association study of a rage-related misophonia symptom and the genetic link with audiological traits, psychiatric disorders, and personality

Abstract: IntroductionPeople with misophonia experience strong negative emotional responses to sounds and associated stimuli—mostly human produced—to an extent that it may cause impairment in social functioning. The exact nature of the disorder remains a matter of ongoing research and debate. Here, we investigated the genetic etiology of misophonia to understand contributing genetic factors and shed light on individual differences in characteristics that are related to the disorder.MethodsFor misophonia, we used an unpu… Show more

“…The main approaches focus on single variation and association analysis. GWAS have identified and replicated common variants in patients self-reporting tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss, as well as tinnitus related to misophonia in population-based cohorts [ 9 , 11 , 41 , 46 , 47 , 58 ]. GWAS studies have been useful in targeting potential regulators in tinnitus development in large population cohorts.…”

“…Fortunately, other researchers already started to tackle it by leveraging the tools I developed in Chapter 2. Several studies have looked at additional correlations between Cog and NonCog and psychiatric traits 337,339,340,352 . In…”

“…Figure 3 | Genetic correlations of Cog (blue) and NonCog (orange) with psychiatric disorders and related traits. These correlations were performed within 5 published manuscripts152,337,339,340,352 (shape), estimates were obtained from available supplementary data (no standard errors are available for Lam et al). Genetic correlations were estimated with LDSC, for specific methodology please refer to the original manuscripts.…”
