A generic workflow for effective sampling of environmental vouchers with UUID assignment and image processing

Abstract: Sampling of biological and environmental vouchers in the field is rather challenging, particularly under adverse habitat conditions and when various activities need to be handled simultaneously. The workflow described here includes five procedural steps, which result in professional sampling and the generation of universally identifiable data. In preparation for the field campaign, sample containers need to be labelled with universally unique identifier (UUID)-QR-codes. At the collection site, labelled contain… Show more

“…Ideally, taxonomic repositories should be able to handle universally unique identifiers to refer to specimens ( Guralnick et al 2015 ; Güntsch et al 2018 ; Nelson et al 2018 ; Triebel et al 2018 ). At present, however, a mandatory use of such identifiers for submission of taxonomic data is unrealistic because, as we have explained above, (i) they do not yet exist for many collections and (ii) the best way of numbering bulk collections is still unclear.…”

“…This information should guarantee the repeatability of the conditions for observation and thus might allow—if all influential factors could be kept under control—for reproducibility of study results. This article supplements two preceding ones, which are also dedicated to the management of environmental research data ( 30 , 31 ).…”

“…The linkages between the segments within campaigns or along a whole workflow can be achieved by applying physical (or digital) object identifier relations, mainly parent identity relation. Object identifiers are identifiers used for defining the physical and digital object or unit identity ( 30 ). Further explanations are given in the chapter ‘Object Identity and Object Identifiers’ below and in Figure 1 .…”

“…Specimens were photographed alive and subsequently transferred to 96% ethanol or preserved in formaldehyde/seawater (1:5), after removing a small piece for barcoding. Detailed information on specimens with our internal identifiers and museum numbers will be available in Diversity Workbench (Triebel et al 2018) within the module Diversity Collection. Type material is stored in the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense in Bogor, Java, Indonesia (MZB.…”
