A Generic Framework for the Development of Standardised Learning Objects within the Discipline of Construction Management

Abstract: E-learning has occurred in the academic world in different forms since the early 1990s. Its use varies from interactive multimedia tools and simulation environments to static resources within learning management systems. E-learning tools and environments are no longer criticised for their lack of use in higher education in general and within the construction domain in particular. The main criticism, however, is that of reinventing the wheel in order to create new learning environments that cater for different … Show more

“…In the building construction sector, ontologies are used to assist the information exchange and sharing, such as education, compliance checking, project management, facility management, and sustainability. Ahmed et al [34] proposed an ontology model for sharable learning objects in construction management. Yurchyshyna and Zarli [35] proposed a framework based on the ontology to check conformance issues and developed an ontological method to semiautomatically check the conformity in construction sector.…”

“…Ontology, as a novel Semantic Web tool, has been widely adopted in knowledge sharing and exchanging between various domains [25,26]. The primary characteristics of ontology, consisting of semantic structure, machine processing capability, and reasoning function, give a significant tool to conduct a holistic design procedure of modelling various domain knowledge.…”

“…As a new semantic web technology, ontology can construct accurate domain knowledge and has been widely applied for knowledge sharing and exchange in different fields (Ahmed et al, 2007). Ontology's interdisciplinary features enable interrelated domains to be considered together, and its semantic structure, logical reasoning capabilities, and other characteristics provide an effective method for cross-domain integrated design.…”
