Abstract: Abstract-The modeling of plant behavior is often essential in the design, performance analysis or diagnosis of Discrete Event Systems (DES). This paper presents a simulation platform that was developed for Automation teaching to 3 rd year students of Mechanical and Electronics Engineering. All the steps, for the development of the platform, are presented and, also, used formalisms and tools are described. A case study is presented, in order to illustrate all steps performed in this context. The main advantage of the simulation platform is that the associated methodology of development can be reproduced to other illustrative examples and, this way, students have more possibilities for learning using new strategies and teaching methodologies related with laboratorial practice.

This paper focuses on timed models which represent closed-loop systems composed of a plant and a logic controller. Both the plant and controller models are described in a formalism where urgent transitions are possible, to avoid non-realistic evolutions, and without deadlock when they are separated.It is first shown that deadlocks may occur in the plant model as soon as both models are coupled. To solve this issue, shared variables which model the changes of the inputs of the controller are defined and introduced in some actions of the plant model as well as in some guards of the controller model; the aim of these variables is to authorize evolutions of the controller only when at least one input has changed. This solution removes the previously pinpointed deadlocks and guarantees the reactivity of the controller.

Industrial automation systems are commonly obliged to comply with correctness requirements and safety standards. Testing and simulation are traditionally used to ensure this compliance. For mission-critical applications, formal verification and model checking in particular are also used, but such techniques are computationally intensive and difficult to apply in practice. This paper searches for synergies between testing and model checking by generalizing an earlier proposed formal test modeling framework. It presents a technique of testing automation systems with the use of model checking, which now supports multiple model checking environments and a more generic test case representation. The proposed technique is applied on a case study involving a simple safety-critical system with timing requirements. Experiments show that the technique is fast despite the use of formal methods and at the same time has several benefits compared to usual testing.
