A Generalized Plasticity approach for describing the behaviour of silty soils forming the Venetian lagoon basin

Abstract: In this paper, the mechanical response of silty sediments forming the upper profile of the Venice lagoon basin is modelled within a theoretical framework known as Generalized Plasticity. Starting from an existing formulation developed for the analysis of sand behaviour, some modifications are introduced in the original model in order to better simulate the stress-strain response of such non-active natural soils over a wide range of stresses and densities. A state dependent dilatancy is included in the constitu… Show more

“…3. Silt is the prevailing lithology of the salt-mashes located in the northern lagoon basin close to the actual littoral strips (Tonni et al, 2006;Biscontin et al, 2007;Cola et al, 2008). Mudflat deposits are composed mainly of clayey silt whereas channel units are medium to fine sand layers, often with shell fragments, interbedded by silt laminations.…”

“…The Newton-Raphson iteration procedure at the local level, i.e. at each Gauss point of the finite element mesh is expressed by Equations (33) and (34). Given a previous constitutive state defined by stress tensor, total and elastic strain tensor and plastic modulus, and a total strain increment the procedure will produce an updated constitutive state.…”

“…The extension of the original SandPZ model to take into account density and stress level dependency through the introduction of a state parameter has already been developed by several authors [33][34][35]. In unloading conditions irreversible strains are contractive.…”
