A Generalized Method for the Analysis of Planar Biaxial Mechanical Data Using Tethered Testing Configurations

Abstract: Simulation of the mechanical behavior of soft tissues is critical for many physiological and medical device applications. Accurate mechanical test data is crucial for both obtaining the form and robust parameter determination of the constitutive model. For incompressible soft tissues that are either membranes or thin sections, planar biaxial mechanical testing configurations can provide much information about the anisotropic stress-strain behavior. However, the analysis of soft biological tissue planar biaxial… Show more

“…Although inverse methods can be used to estimate model parameters, a straightforward estimate of the model parameters via fitting experiment data is still desirable (Zhang et al, 2015). We examined the effect of each invariant by comparing the stress components from Eq.…”

“…As observed in our other studies [29,32], the chemical fixation process will affect the specimen dimensions, and any analysis must carefully account for these effects on the collagen fibre kinematics. We thus defined the following configurations: b 0 -native, b 1 -EXL (figure 3b), used as the referential configurations for the native and EXL states, respectively.…”

“…This means that, when developing computational models, each region of the heart should be treated differently and accurate material properties should be assigned. Accordingly, the accuracy of simulations may be affected if the simplified (Zhang et al, 2015) is used as a constitutive model for simulating heart, each region should be assigned different material parameters in order to simulate the material behaviour accurately.…”
