A generalization of environmental productivity analysis

Abstract: This paper aims to analyse environmental Total Factor Productivity (TFP) change. Indeed, innovative environmental TFP measures are introduced through convex and non convex environmental production processes. Hence, the impacts of input and output quality change on environmental productivity variation are underscored. In addition, general decomposition of the new ratio-and differencebased environmental TFP measures is proposed.

“…The method he proposes not only evaluates the environmental productivity of the entire steel industry but also examines each of its subprocesses. Then, he proved the validity of the proposed model through the application of 48 steel enterprises in China during 2009–2013 [ 1 ]. Volis et al aimed to investigate and study the relationship between environmental innovation, environmental performance, and environmental productivity.…”

“…For any ðx s , y s Þ U, the 4 Notice that the PHM productivity index is decomposed through an output orientation. As this productivity index is a TFP measure, it can be decomposed following either an output orientation or an input orientation as well (Abad & Ravelojaona, 2022).…”

“…In this paper, the performance change assessment of Ecuadorian petroleum companies is performed following the nonconvex pollution‐adjusted Malmquist (PM) and Hicks–Moorsteen (PHM) productivity indices (Abad & Ravelojaona, 2022, 2021). The PM productivity measure takes the form of the Malmquist index (Caves et al, 1982; Färe et al, 1995) while the PHM productivity measure inherits the structure of the HM index (Bjurek, 1996).…”

“…First, the Hicks‐Moorsteen TFP index is multiplicatively complete (O'Donnell, 2012). This permits separate analysis of output and input growth or decline, which can also be adapted to the environmental context (Abad & Ravelojaona, 2022). For our partial productivity formulations, this means that one can separately assess aggregate output change and energy use change, on the one hand, and GHG emission change and polluting input change, on the other hand.…”

“…The only alternative theoretical models that use a by‐production framework to model bad outputs in both convex and non‐convex ways are found in Abad and Briec (2019) and Abad and Ravelojaona (2021, 2022). These models are based on recent work to measure strong forms of hypercongestion for convex and non‐convex technologies in Briec et al (2016) who develop a limited form of strong disposability called S ‐disposability (see Briec et al (2018) for an empirical illustration).…”
