Abstract:Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a qualitative analytical approach for critically describing, interpreting, and explaining the ways in which discourses construct, maintain, and legitimize social inequalities. CDA rests on the notion that the way we use language is purposeful, regardless of whether discursive choices are conscious or unconscious. CDA takes a number of different approaches and incorporates a variety of methods that depend on research goals and theoretical perspectives. This methodological gu… Show more

This article discusses the role of reflexion in the process of decision-making of teachers associated with the pedagogical uses of ICT. Drawing on the synergies between Freire's and Dewey's notions of reflexive practice, the presentation reports the theoretical foundations and the preliminary results of a doctoral thesis that explores the phenomenon inside a Chilean school as a model of continuous professional development (CPD). The institution has been conducting a CPD programme based on a social constructivist approach aiming to increase teachers' agency for approximately 10 years. Considering the expectations of institutional policies, as well as different contextual factors that may shape the pedagogical uses of ICT, the study explores the ways in which teachers use the reflexive practice model as a means towards conscious incorporations of technology.

“…Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is applied, in order to reach an understanding of the use of language in discourse, the identification of the social order and social wrongs related to GM identity. Because CDA focuses on social problems -not on scholarly paradigms -it can be applied to understand and address problems by means of any theory or methodology (Mullet, 2018).…”
This article offers new ways of identifying and perceiving gay Muslims in Germany through discursive practices, such as the acceptance of queer Muslims in Islam, alongside cultural hegemony of religious gatekeepers. The article specifically explores the utilisation of Norman Fairclough's (2010) critical discourse analysis to comprehend the identity of gay Muslims in Germany and to advance the current understanding of gay Muslims and their relations within the socio-religious space. The nature of this relationship is demonstrated through discursive choices (the identity of gay Muslims within a religious context and in society); the use of dominant and restrictive subjective narratives and language between group gatekeepers (religious leaders: Imam and Islamic devouts); and the isolated members of Islam (gay Muslims). This enquiry will be illuminated by qualitative critical discourse analysis interviews on YouTube in which specific actors related to the study were interviewed on themes such as identity, acceptance of gay Muslims and relations with them in a religious community or a social space.
“…Most recently, it has been argued that CDA is an increasingly important tool for critical-qualitative-communication research (Reynolds 2018). It is a qualitative analytical approach for critically describing, interpreting, and explaining the ways through which discourses construct and legitimize social inequalities within a broad context (Mullet 2018). Fairclough (2013) argued that CDA is a method for the analysis of language in relation to power and ideology.…”

The Muslim community in America has been facing turmoil, particularly after the events of 9/11. Muslims are facing a number of anti-Islamic and anti-Muslim discriminatory practices, biases, and sentiments from many Americans. These religious prejudices are apparent at the public and political leadership levels, as well as other facets of the country. The current study has concentrated on Trump’s emerging ideology that positions him within anti-Islamic and anti- Muslim discourses since he announced his candidature for the presidency. The study aims to examine and pin point the self-other representations that are evident in the Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiments in Trump’s statements during the American Presidential Elections of 2016. In order to examine Trump’s prejudicial discourse, the research engaged with Critical Discourse Studies as its framework, with a specific focus upon Van Dijk’s Ideological Square Model as well as NVIVO 12 Pro for linguistic inquiry. The results showed that the self-other binary is strongly evidenced in Trump’s statements and that he employed various discursive techniques to represent Islam and Muslims in a negative manner, while representing himself as very patriotic to the country. To legitimatize his arguments, he deployed several rhetoric strategies, including victimization, presupposition, authority, number game, evidentiality, polarization, and populism. Keeping the religious and economic context in view, the research reveals that Donald Trump has represented Islam and Muslims as a negative phenomenon and presented himself as an Islamophobe by negatively targeting Islamic components, like Shariah and Jihad. In his prejudicial representation of Islam, most of the Islamic beliefs are represented as anti-women and anti-American, threatening the security of America and its very way of life.
