A geminivirus-related DNA mycovirus that confers hypovirulence to a plant pathogenic fungus

Abstract: Mycoviruses are viruses that infect fungi and have the potential to control fungal diseases of crops when associated with hypovirulence. Typically, mycoviruses have double-stranded (ds) or singlestranded (ss) RNA genomes. No mycoviruses with DNA genomes have previously been reported. Here, we describe a hypovirulenceassociated circular ssDNA mycovirus from the plant pathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The genome of this ssDNA virus, named Sclerotinia sclerotiorum hypovirulence-associated DNA virus 1 (S… Show more

“…The wide phylogenetic diversity of mycoviruses is reflected by their current classification into seven dsRNA families and five ssRNA families (www.ictvonline.org), and many novel taxa are awaiting description (e.g., Preisig et al, 2000;Ahn and Lee, 2001;Márquez et al, 2007;Hammond et al, 2008;Liu et al, 2009;Yu et al, 2010). Mycoviruses with RNA genomes propagate within the cytoplasm or mitochondria of their hosts and are transmitted laterally between fungal strains through anastomoses.…”

“…The host for the coral-associated SCSDVs presented here is yet to be determined, but may include the algal endosymbiont (Symbiodinium spp., because nanovirus/geminiviruses infect plants), the coral host itself (because circoviruses infect animals), or another member of the coral holobiont (Yu et al, 2010;Delwart and Li, 2012;Rosario et al, 2012;). However, a previous study examining viruses associated with Montastraea cavernosa coral colonies searched Symbiodinium EST libraries and found few similarities to SCSDVs suggesting that the SCSDVs associated with diseased corals in this study are infecting the coral animal.…”

“…Chemical methods to control phytopathogenic fungi can affect human health and have environmental consequences. In an attempt to minimize dependence on chemical methods, alternative means of pathogen control have been investigated (Yu et al, 2010). One alternative is to use hypovirulent phytopathogenic fungal strains that can biologically control phytopathogenic fungi of the same or related species.…”
