A gemini guest triggers the self-assembly of a calixarene capsule in water at neutral pH

Abstract: A gemini guest having both aromatic units and negative charges induces the self-assembling of a homodimeric capsule when interacting with a positively charged calixarene at pH 7.

“…2D ROESY NMR spectroscopy is one of the most effective tools for the study of inter-and intramolecular interactions of complex systems. The presence of cross peaks generated by nuclear Overhauser effects (NOE) between spatially close protons gives useful information about the dynamics and averaged relative inter/intramolecular proton distances of these particles within 0.4 nm in solution [37][38][39].…”

“…Over the past decades, molecular capsule-liked assemblies composed of two or more calixarenes have gained considerable attention [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Owing to the facile modification of the calixarene scaffold, various capsule-like assemblies have been constructed and applied to encapsulation, catalysis, enantioselective recognition, and molecule sensing [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. To our knowledge, reports on fluorescence changes resulting from encapsulation into supramolecular calixarene capsule-like assemblies remain elusive, despite the anticipated regulation of the photophysical and photochemical properties by capsulation.…”

“…[2,3] Among the approaches that are being used to induce selfassemblyo fs upramolecular systems in aqueous environment, ap rominentr ole is played by applicationso fc oordination bonds [4,5] and electrostatic interactions. [6][7][8] Hydrophobic interactions have also been used to induce self-assemblyo fm ulticomponent structures and functional host-guest complexes in water. [9][10][11][12][13] In contrast, applications of neutralh ydrogen bonds are restricted,a st hey are commonlyc onsidered ineffective in this environment.…”
