Abstract:In the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), proteolytic activity is tightly regulated to prevent inappropriate and potentially harmful proteolysis. In IBD this regulation is broken and our recent work has demonstrated that elastolytic activity is significantly increased in colonic epithelium from IBD patients. We have shown that the expression of the only elastase released by epithelial cells, ELA2 is up‐regulated; and the selective elastase inhibitor ELAFIN is severely down regulated in colonic epithelium from IBD p… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
