A gardian of gut epithelial barrier from inflammation: the elastase inhibitor ELAFIN

Abstract: In the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), proteolytic activity is tightly regulated to prevent inappropriate and potentially harmful proteolysis. In IBD this regulation is broken and our recent work has demonstrated that elastolytic activity is significantly increased in colonic epithelium from IBD patients.
